JLab (JROTC Leadership Academic Bowl) team
The Hillhouse JLAB team is split into 2 teams academic and leadership. The teams each compete in the national COF contest before combining to form the JLAB team for their brigade competition at Francis Lewis High School. No more than 12 cadet trainees and 2 cadet trainers may be on the team at a given time. Practice will be held once per week and homeowrk assignments will be given for that week. The two teams will study seperate until 4 weeks before the brigade competition. Cadets in the academic team will be required to read one classic book every month as approved by the team OIC, as well as receive tutoring in mathematics from a pre-determined teacher. Cadets on the leadership team will be required to read one biography of a military or political leader ,as approved by the team OIC, and create a annalysis of that leaders traits and positive as well as negative attributes. Cadet trainnes will be graded with meriots and demerits
- Arriving On time to Practice = 1 merit
- Completing 1 full practice day= 1 merit
- Passing ,in practice, tests and challenges= 1 meriit
- Successfully completing homework assignments= TBD
- Awarded by OIC for stellar performance= TBD
The use of demerits ensures that the team has a system of punishment as well as praise demerits are given out for:
- Failing to arrive on time to practice (without advanced notice) = 1demerit
- Failure to arrive to practice (after the third offense, or without advanced notice) = 1/2 demerit
- Failing to abide by JROTC and school policies while at practice/ Insubordination= 3 demerits
- Failing to complete assigned work = number of merits received for completeing the assignment
3 weeks prior to a competeion the JLAB team OIC and NCOIC will Select the team out of the trainees they have 3 weeks prior to the competetion . Participation in the competetion is directly related to merits. Cadets with more merits take precedence over cadets with fewer merits. Cadets with negative merits 3 weeks prior to the competition will not be allowed to participate in the practices or competition from that point forward, and will not be admitted to the team the following year.
