Battalion Commander: This position is the most demanding in the corps of cadets. The cadet chosen for this position is selected based on previously demonstrated leadership ability. It requires the use of common sense and good judgment in solving problems that affect the entire battalion. The cadet appointed to this position must be mature, willing to accept responsibility and delegate authority, supervise subordinates, and stand by his/her own convictions. Control of the staff is through the XO and control of the company commanders. Specific responsibilities of the battalion commander include:
- Commands the battalion at all formations.
- Prepares for and conducts the training of the battalion on battalion training days.
- Maintains a direct and personal relationship with the staff and the company commander.
- Encourages the company commanders to deal directly with him,
- Uses the staff to assist him in gathering information and preparing plans for training and control of subordinate units.
- Designates staff officers to assist in preparation, supervision, and execution of his orders.
- Ensures that the feelings of mutual respect and confidence exist between the staff and company commanders.
- Also ensures that staff is capable and they understand their responsibilities to him/her and the corps of cadets.
- Through the chain of command, ensures compliance with the James Hill house High School JROTC regulations, policies, and directives.
- Seeks advice and assistance from the SAI, the JROTC Military Staff, and ensures all instructions from the JROTC Military Staff are carried out quickly and completely.
Battalion Executive Officer (XO): The Battalion XO is the principal assistant to the battalion commander. The battalion XO is the coordinator and supervisor of the staff, thereby enabling the battalion commanders to spend more time on the broader aspects of command. The battalion XO must assure the desires of the battalion commander are understood and carried out, the staff is kept informed of the policies of the commander and keeps the commander informed of the status of projects assigned to the staff. The battalion XO assumes command of the battalion in the absence of the commander. Specific responsibilities include:
- Supervision of the preparation of required reports and their submission as directed by higher authority.
- Assures the staff is properly prepared, organized, works as a team, and plans future activities for the battalion
- Assures instructions and orders issued to the battalion are in accordance with established policies of the battalion commander and the JROTC Military Staff.
- Reports all violations of orders to the battalion commander.
- Conducts periodic inspections of the JROTC area and takes necessary actions to see that it is properly policed and arranged.
- Is prepared to evaluate the performance of the battalion staff
Battalion Command Sergeant Major (CSM): The Battalion Commander Sergeant Major is the principle cadet enlisted assistant tot the Battalion Commander. As the senior enlisted member of the corps of cadets the CSM supervises the other NCOs of the battalion with particular emphasis of the company ISG. Specific duties of the CSM are:
1. Advise and assist the battalion Commander on all matters pertaining to the members of the corps of cadets.
2. Assist the battalion S-1 the formation and alignment of the battalion at all battalion formations.
3.Assures the battalion headquarters is maintained in high state of police at all times.
4.Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Battalion Commander, Battalion XO,or the JROTC Military Staff.
